SWF Introduces High-Speed Multihead

FEBRUARY 05, 2007

Press Release

FEBRUARY 05, 2007 — Mesa Distributors, Fort Worth, Texas, the West Coast distributor for SWF embroidery machines, showed a unique new model at ISS Long Beach that builds on the Korean brand's reputation for multihead innovation. The new line of 1,500-stitches-per-minute (spm) Dream Machines represents the fastest multiheads in the world, matched only by Melco Embroidery Systems' singlehead Amaya in sewing speed.

The advantage of such a high-speed system is the potential cost savings, notes Scott Colman, president, SWF East, the Tampa, Fla.-based East Coast distributor for SWF. "It will save a significant amount of money or decrease labor by a large margin," he says.

As Colman points out, most multiheads operate at 800 spm, whereas the Dream Machine can typically operate at 1,300-plus spm. "It will produce almost twice as much or reduce labor costs by 30% to 50%," he says. Colman believes the savings could give U.S. embroiderers the chance to regain some of their competitiveness. "It will slow down the outflow of work from the United States," he says, explaining that if you can output more product in less time, then you can sell it for less.

Colman described the 6-head machine (model DM-UK1506-45) on display at ISS Long Beach as a "hand-built" rather than production-ready model. Yet, twice we observed this machine zipping through a 51,077-stitch design at speeds of 1,320 and 1,340 spm — without our once seeing a thread break.

To achieve such high-speed performance, the machine's internal mechanisms were redesigned from the ground up, according to Colman, who singled out the "very smooth and accurate XY frame movement" and the critical balance of the sewing head, "so the machine doesn't vibrate too much."

According to Colman, the 6-head Dream Machine, available in May or June 2007, will be the first of a series ranging from two to 30 heads. The 15-needle machine features a 500 mm x 450 mm sewing field, color LCD control panel, USB/memory stick capability, automatic lubrication, quick-change cap driver and 2-million-stitch memory capacity. — R.L.
